361 Staff’s Stories of Life in Quarantine

Like so many others, 361 Capital employees began working from home in mid-March. Now that we are in week five, we thought it would be fun to share some of our staff’s experiences during quarantine. Below are our staff’s answers to what they are watching, what they are enjoying and what they are missing during this quarantine.

Josh Vail, CAIA | President

Describe your work from home location:
In the basement, so my office mates are the toys from Christmases past.
Best part of quarantine for you:
Spending large amounts of time with my family in one spot without the obligation of activities, commute and travel. I hope some of this quality time and pace of life sticks!
Thing you miss most about the office:
Face-to-face strategy sessions with the team.
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
My oldest daughter (13) and I have been crushing some old action movies. Did you know “Top Gun” and “Days of Thunder” are pretty much the same movie?
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
I removed the front drive shaft, replaced the CV joint, and then reinstalled the drive shaft of my Jeep…and it worked! Two months ago I didn’t know what a CV joint was!

Kelsey Sokoloski | Director of Sales, Great Lakes Region

Describe your work from home location:
I stole my wife’s office from her and she has moved to the kitchen table. My office mates are a two year old, usually in a princess dress, and a newborn. Needless to say it can be a little distracting, but we are getting through.
Best part of quarantine for you:
Being able to spend a lot more quality time with my family, especially not traveling every other week.
Thing you miss most about the office:
Blaine’s coffee machine. It is way stronger then the stuff I can make at home. And talking with coworkers on a daily basis.
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
“Ford vs. Ferrari”
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
I have memorized/heard every Disney princess song that was ever made. I don’t know if that is a skill, but I know them all now.

Jason Leupold | Vice President of Trading and Research

Describe your work from home location:
I currently work in my basement. I wish I had something interesting to say but I have a pretty good setup from when I worked out of my basement. I have, however, learned not to leave my kids unattended for the virtual play dates. I found an “Ironman” action figure through my (now broken) laptop screen after my son and his friend had an action figure battle…I guess he lost.
Best part of quarantine for you:
Making fancy coffee and having more than just oatmeal for breakfast.
Thing you miss most about the office:
The people and the conversations. I love hearing what everyone does and about the random things that happen in their lives.
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
“Ozark”
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
Learning to be a teacher has brought new respect to what an amazing job our educators do. Thanks! Oh and I am working towards upping my skills in R – programming.

Blaine Rollins, CFA | Portfolio Manager, Managing Director

Describe your work from home location:
I am ‘the Essential Employee’ so I have the entire fifth floor to myself. My new best friends are two dozen plants, the FedEx person and volatility.

Growing out my hair Paul McCulley style.
Thing you miss most about the office:
My daily vegan breakfast burrito from the building’s café (closed).
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
How to wear a face mask without fogging my glasses.

Mary Pettit | Director, Content Marketing

Describe your work from home location:
I’m sharing a kitchen counter cubicle space with my fiancé in our small downtown apartment. I’ve learned I’m about to marry a guy who uses the phrase “let’s circle back on that” often.
Best part of quarantine for you:
I’ve hit my sleep goal every night for the last month.
Thing you miss most about the office:
The endless supply of green tea and chit chat with coworkers.
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
“Schitt’s Creek” on Netflix
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
I’m working on perfecting my spicy margarita recipe.

Jeff Hood | Director of Sales, Midwest Region

Describe your work from home location:
I’m working from our loft space, which has the incredible ability to magnify the sounds emanating from our already quite loud 1- and 3-year old kids. If you’ve spent any time on a call with me over the last month, you likely know exactly what I’m talking about…
Best part of quarantine for you:
Settling into a routine with my family. Having the opportunity to sit down to breakfast and dinner together every day has been really special.
Thing you miss most about the office:
The friendly sports debates. Remember sports? I miss them…
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
Is there any answer other than “Tiger King”?
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
I bought a Weber smoker and have been working to perfect my ribs/pulled pork/brisket.

Brian Harvey, CFA | Senior Equity Analyst

Describe your work from home location:
It’s an open office plan – meaning our loft. It is both spacious and “open to the elements” of loud kids and hungry cats that attack me every morning.
Best part of quarantine for you:
Still being able to work somewhat normally, especially during an unfortunate time when many are much worse off. I’d be going crazy (more than I already am) if I was not busy. Luckily no one looks down on me when I’m drinking “at the office”. It’s great to easily hang out with the family in the middle of the day, too!
Thing you miss most about the office:
Mostly just being around everyone. Stable internet connection is a close second.
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
Started reading “East of Eden”. It is the first novel I have read in a long time and a departure from the usual non-fiction. Great so far.
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
While not initially on my quarantine to-do list, I’ve spent time painting rocks with my daughters. Theirs look amazing, mine got laughed at.

Andrea Coleman, CAIA | Director of Sales, East Coast Region

Describe your work from home location:
Thankfully I have a little space to work in, but I can’t sit all day so move to a ‘standing desk’ that consists of my laptop sitting on a CD box with my mouse on a couple of books on my kitchen island. My husband and dog are my new office mates which has been overall good – but my dog keeps hiding because he is tired of the marathon afternoon walks I want to go on.
Best part of quarantine for you:
I am getting full use of the array of Costco jogger sweatpants I’ve been buying the last few years.
Thing you miss most about the office:
I miss getting coffees with my coworkers and hearing the play by play of Kelsey’s travels.
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
Currently binging “Ozark” on Netflix – #teamRuth. I’m about to start a new podcast limited series called “The Missing Crypto Queen” which I’m pretty excited about too.
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
No new skills, but I’ve been knocking out puzzles like they are going out of style. I may join the competitive jigsaw puzzle circuit after this (yes it is a thing).

Toller Miller, CIMA | Vice President, Director of Sales

Describe your work from home location:
I’ve taken over my wife’s home office and she has turned the guest bedroom into her “she shed” for her to work in. Turns out our new colleague (4 year old son) thinks he should get his own office, but he’s still on his 90 day probationary period. We’ll see if we keep him employed, but it’s not looking good as of now…
Best part of quarantine for you:
“Popping in” on friends via FaceTime. They HATE it…I LOVE it!! Makes my day to see who answers and just how disheveled they are.
Thing you miss most about the office:
Being able to go in early on snow days, so I don’t have to shovel in the dark and hope the snow melts before I get home!
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
Puzzles…ALL the puzzles.
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
I’m learning how to talk on the phone, throw darts and grow a mustache all at the same time!

Kathy Maggiora | Executive Assistant

Describe your work from home location:
A home office in a spare bedroom that I share with my husband.
Best part of quarantine for you:
The commute.
Thing you miss most about the office:
My coworkers and the laughter we share.
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
I don’t binge.
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
Goal: get through the quarantine.

Adam Ruffalo | Director of Information Technology

Describe your work from home location:
Office mates are my wife and two dogs that I now realize alternate between sleeping and pacing back and forth all day…not sure they like us being here.
Best part of quarantine for you:
Getting to wear shorts and t-shirts every day.
Thing you miss most about the office:
Ummmm, uhhh….I’ll have to think on that, can’t really think of much. I guess I miss being surrounded by hundreds of computer parts in my office – does that count? Actually, no, no I don’t miss that at all. Ok, the people. I’ll go with that.
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
“Ozark”, season two and of course, “Tiger King” like everyone else on the planet.
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
Finished a 2000 piece puzzle, and have been using the Peloton every day trying to offset some of the calories from all of the extra food I seem to be eating. I think I’ve also been playing more video games than I did when I was 12, and that was a lot.

Maddie Schultz | Receptionist / Office Administrator

Describe your work from home location:
I have turned my dining room into my new working space and oddly enough I’m getting more use out it now than I ever was before. Also, I am enjoying my new office mate Chester who feels that every moment is the perfect time for a good scratching and a treat.
Best part of quarantine for you:
Evening walks with Chester and Gabe, as well as being able to have dinner ready before 8pm now that the gyms are closed.
Thing you miss most about the office:
My usual routine and enjoying Friday lunches with the rest of the team, are two things I definitely miss!
Best thing you binged (podcast, movie, TV or book):
Lately, I have taken a liking to a few cooking shows and of course, “The Incredible Dr. Pol. Also, I am a huge fan of “The Office” and I have been catching up on the latest Office Ladies podcast.
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
I learned how to make my own dog treats, which was pretty fun. I have also been using this time to be more creative with the meals I cook and to learn more about nutrition. My favorite creation so far would have to be the avocado chicken lime soup I made.

Chad Greenberg, CPA/PFS | Managing Director, 361 Infrastructure Partners, LLC

Describe your work from home location:
I am very fortunate to have a separate home office – which at times feels like a revolving door. My new office assistant is my 11 year old daughter and my office mascot is my 2 year old black lab “Beast”.
Best part of quarantine for you:
For the first time in my career, I actually eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner with my wife and kids.
Thing you miss most about the office:
My stand up desk.

“Formula 1”, season two on Netflix.
Are you learning any new skills in quarantine or have any goals you’re trying to accomplish?
I’m learning digital painting on my Microsoft Surface Pro tablet. Loving it!!
